Linen vs Cotton Sheets

Linen and cotton are the two most common options when it comes to choosing sheets for your bed. There isn’t a right or wrong choice, it all comes down to your personal preferences and lifestyle. Below we’ll look at the benefits of each so you can be confident about your decision to use one or the other.

Linen

Comfort

Produced from the flax plant, linen is one of the oldest and most coveted textiles because of its pillowing softness. The way the fabric is woven is what gives it, its softness.

Linen sheets are thermodynamic, the natural breathability of linen keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. These sheets are naturally hypoallergenic and are often used by people who suffer from allergies or have sensitive skin. Linen is also great for sweaty sleepers as it absorbs moisture.

Style

If you have OCD and like the perfect finished look, this is not the sheet for you. Linen’s natural state is wrinkled. The actual weave of the sheet is irregular and not flawlessly smooth like cotton. Linen lacks lustre and shine but does have loads of texture.

Care

New linen sheets won’t feel as soft as cotton when you first purchase them but will soften the more you wash them. The best way to wash your linen sheets is to set them on a 30 degrees gentle wash cycle and use a plant-based cleaning agent. Because linen naturally pills it is not advisable to tumble-dry your linen sheets. Tumble-drying will only leave you with heaps of fluff and it will shorten the lifetime of your sheets.

Cotton

Comfort

Both cotton sateen and cotton percale sheets have a perfectly smooth weave that will give you a different kind of softness than linen. Cotton is, unfortunately, less thermodynamic than linen as the higher thread count provides less breathability which can affect hot sleepers. Cotton percale has a crisp smooth feel whereas cotton sateen gives a silky-smooth feel.

Style

This is a good choice for those with OCD as cotton is wrinkle-resistant that will give you a fresh clean look. Cotton percale matches well with linen for those who would prefer a bit of both.

Care

Same as your linen sheets, cotton sheets can be washed on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees using a plant-based detergent. You can tumble-dry cotton percale sheets, but it is not recommended for cotton sateen as the heat will make it pill.

Hope the above tips will come in handy when you are out shopping for your next set of sheets.
