16th March 2022Are you downsizing your home, converting a room into a gym, or have a teenager going off to college? If so, you might need to store a mattress at some point. A good mattress can be expensive so it is very important to take proper steps in preserving the longevity of your mattress while in storage.
Herewith a few steps to follow ensuring your mattress stays in top condition while in storage.
- It is very important to clean your mattress before storage even if you wash your bedding consistently, your mattress can accumulate dust mites, sweat and dirt over time. Storing a dirty mattress can cause bacteria, leading to mold and fungus growing on your mattress.
- Remove the mattress from the base and strip all the linen off. Apply a small amount of baking soda onto your mattress and let it sit for and hour or so on the surface of the mattress. This will absorb bad odour and remove any stains. Vacuum up the baking soda, air out your mattress for several hours to ensure your bed is completely dry.
- Your mattress is now ready to be plastic wrapped that will prevent your mattress from collecting dust, make sure to use a breathable plastic wrap as a thick plastic can trap moisture and lead to bacteria.
- Transporting your mattress can be tricky too. Avoid strapping your mattress to the top of your car or trying to squeeze it into the back of a bakkie or the boot of your car, you risk damaging your mattress’s inner foundation. Best is to hire a professional mover or a bigger struck to accommodate the size of your mattress to prevent any damage to the interior and exterior.
- Once you load it into the moving truck, you can then prop it on its side if you have other furniture pieces, as long as it’s for a short period of time.
- You can transport your mattress upright but you cannot store your mattress upright. Make sure that you have room to store your mattress flat and do not place any heavy objects on top of your mattress while in storage. If you do not have floor space, use other furniture items or boxes to create a flat surface.
- Climate-controlled storage units are the best choice for storing a mattress because they will help protect your mattress from uncertain weather conditions throughout the year
- The same preparation steps as above can be followed for storing your mattress in the garage. If you’re not using a climate-controlled storage unit, invest in a portable dehumidifier to place in your garage.
- Once you remove your mattress out of storage, let it air out for a few hours then follow the cleaning procedures as above. Your mattress should be fresh, clean, and ready to be slept on.
Knowing how to store your mattress properly is a big part of maintaining the quality of your mattress If you follow these steps, you’ll have a better chance of having a clean and odour-free mattress when you use it again.
