Electric Blanket Do’s and Don’ts

10th August 2022 Off By Marketing

When using an electric blanket make sure to follow these simple safety guidelines to ensure your electric blanket does not become a fire hazard.

Do’s

Lay the electric blanket flat rather than folded or balled up so the heat does not become too intense.

Keep items such as books, pillows, and stuffed animals off the blanket so that the heat has a way to escape.

Keep pets off your electric blankets. Sharp claws or teeth could puncture the cable insulation or damage the wires.

When not in use, turn it off, most models do not have internal temperature control, so they will not automatically turn off if they overheat.

Wrap the control cables loosely around the blanket when folding it up for storage.

When you see smoke or smell something burning, turn it off and unplug the electric blanket immediately. Discolouration could indicate the melting or burning of internal elements.

When your electric blanket starts operating improperly it is best to call the manufacturer for advice. If you cannot solve the problem, discontinue using the product.

Don’t

Don’t use electric blankets on the beds of infants, toddlers, people with disabilities, or anyone who cannot operate the heating controls themselves.

Never leave an electric blanket on all night unless it is specifically rated for safe overnight use.

Do not run the electric cable between the mattress and base, this can damage or heat up the cable and potentially cause a fire.

Avoid pinching or twisting the control cable as it can damage them. To prevent damage never use electric blankets on adjustable hospital beds or sleeper couches where the cables could become pinched in the folding mechanisms.

Avoid using an electric blanket on a waterbed.

Never wash your electric blanket as the twisting and tugging motions of a washing machine will damage the internal coils.

You don’t need to dry clean your electric blanket; the solvents used in dry cleaning will damage the cable insulation.

There may seem to be a lot of do’s and don’ts, but most of them are common sense. By using your electric blanket safely, you will enjoy all the added warmth and cosiness it provides.
