Whenever you travel there is always a difference between a good trip and a bad one and it is determined by the amount of sleep you get.  We’ve all at some stage of our life had to experience the difficult task of falling asleep while travelling. Being on a flight, train or bus, transportation modes can be crowded and noisy, trying to get some zzz’s can be quite a challenge. Getting a good sleep while travelling is a great way to pass the time and you will also feel rested and refreshed when reaching your destination.

Herewith a few tips on how to get the best sleep when traveling:

Best Seat

It is extremely important to pick the right seat if you want to get some shut eye. On a flight avoid the middle seat or even the aisle seat, if you want to avoid being woken up every time a fellow traveller needs to use the restroom or chit chat with his family or friends sitting a few rows away, aim for a seat next to the window. A window seat not only gives you a peaceful atmosphere, but you can draw the binds and use them as a head rest.

Travel Light

It’s understandable that you don’t like to wear the same clothes twice especially the ladies, but if you need to pack that extra one or two outfits, do it in the check-in luggage only. Always carry the very basics on board with you in a bag that can be stored in the overhead cabinet. It is very important to leave plenty of space for your feet. If you are taking the train, stuff everything below your seat and use your hand bag as a pillow.

Keeping Warm

Don’t be fooled by the room temperature before the journey begins. Temperatures often drops a few minutes after taking off, and trying to sleep when cold is not very comfortable. Keep your jacket with you as you may not always get blankets.

Own Blanket, Pillow or Neck Rest

Having your own blanket has its own perks as no stranger has used it before. The familiar textures and smell can also help you relax and fall asleep more easily. Having your own neck rest or pillow will come in handy especially if you not seated next to the window.

Earplugs or Earphones

Noise can be one of the biggest issues and there is no other way to avoid it other than wearing earplugs or earphones. It is recommended to use sound cancellation earphones as they will not only shut out the noise, but also provide you with your favourite music.

Sleep Mask

Having a sleep mask when traveling will block out any light coming in from the sun or the bright lights from the flight, train or bus, it will also give you a sense of privacy and make you feel more hidden.

Meditate

Did you forget your earplugs or earphones and the kid sitting next to you is ultra loud? Or are you just not falling asleep even though you followed all of the above? Don’t despair because we have a few more solutions for you. We would like to suggest some meditation to help you sleep.

It might not sound as great as actually falling asleep, but meditating can be relaxing and restful none the less. Sit back, close your eyes and breath, inhale for four counts then exhale for eight counts, do this for 3 minutes and repeat if needed. You can also use various kinds of meditation apps to assist.

Happy travels and sweet dreams.
