Before buying a new mattress, it is important to know the type of feel that your body needs. You should establish whether you need a Plush, Firm or Medium mattress that will give you the necessary comfort for a peaceful night’s sleep.

A plush mattress will give you a soft feel, it’s the type of mattress that you can gently sink into, cradling and hugging you as you fall asleep.

A firm mattress is firm, it shouldn’t feel like a plank of wood but it is unfortunately the type of mattress that doesn’t have a ton of give. A firm mattress will not give you that sinking feeling but instead will provide more back support.

Every person defines their own comfort as we are all different shapes and sizes. What is comfortable for you might not be as comfortable for the next person.

When you start shopping for a new mattress, you have to think about your weight, height, sleeping position and any medical conditions such as back issues or hip pain.

It is always best to visit a store near by to try out the various different types of mattresses to establish whether you require a firm mattress that will provide a sturdy support or a plush mattress that will provide pressure point relief.

For those suffering with nerve-related back pain or back pain from an injury, a medium-firm to firm mattress is the best option. A stable mattress is recommended as a plush mattress will not provide back support and will simply result in more pain.

Keep in mind that back pain doesn’t always mean you need a firm mattress. Should you wake up in the morning with back pain that subsides as the day goes on and you don’t feel that you are sinking into your mattress, it may simply mean that your mattress is too firm. A plush mattress may be a better option or adding a mattress topper to your current firm mattress can help ease that back pain.

The best option for side sleepers will be a plush mattress as it will provide pressure point relief. If you are a side sleeper with shoulder pain, sleeping on a firm mattress will only increase that pain.

Stomach sleepers require a firm mattress. A too soft mattress will cause your stomach and hips to sink in and bend your back, leaving you uncomfortable and sore the next morning.

While you out shopping and testing the mattresses, you will find there are many options available on the firmness scale from extremely soft to extra firm. There are soft, medium, medium-soft, medium-firm and firm. You will also find innerspring, gel foam, memory foam, and hybrid mattresses, each made for varying needs while offering different sleep experiences.

With all the options available, think of these levels of firmness as steppingstones to getting your best sleep. If one bed isn’t exactly right, move up or down the scale and try another. Keep trying until you land on the one that’s perfect for you.
