Our mattress ensures that we get a good night’s sleep but when it gets too old, we need to replace it with a new mattress. Now what to do with our old mattress? Herewith a few fun ways to utilise your old mattress.

The Family Bed, a great way to spend some quality time with the family. Convert your living room into the perfect cinema and invite the family over for a movie night. Place all your old mattresses side by side against a wall, stack some big comfy pillows against the wall, get the popcorn and snacks ready and voila it’s movie time.

The perfect Fort, rainy days can leave the kids bored and irritated, why not build them the perfect fort with mattresses, pillows and blanket and let their imaginations run wild. Like the Fort for the boys, you can also a create a princess tower for your little girl, add some soft fabrics or mosquito netting and hang a few fairy lights creating her own personal private space.

Patio Swing, feeling crafty, want to test out your DIY skills, why not build a patio swing. There are various quick and easy plans available on the internet. Make a list of all the materials you need before heading off to the hardware store, remember to buy materials suitable for outdoor weather. Once your frame is built place your mattress onto your swing. Now you have the perfect spot for your morning coffee or a corner for relaxing and reading.

Kids Party, create the ideal outdoor movie night. Use your old mattresses that you have been storing, place them on the grass and decorate it with lots of blankets and pillows. Hang some lanterns around the garden, you can decorate your backyard to look like a theater with movie related items. Hang a large sheet or projector material to create your screen, connect your laptop and sound system to the projector and the night is a go. Don’t forget the popcorn and snacks.

Student Living Room, lets get crafty again. It’s time for your young adult to leave the nest and go off to study, instead of spending a fortune on new furniture for their apartment why not make use of that old base and mattress lying around collecting dust. Use your old base and mattress and transform this into a couch. This idea will suit both boys and girls and it is not only for college kids but you can do this in your own home if you have a play or game.

Let’s not forget our furry friend. Instead of buying a new doggy bed, lets make one. Get some few pallets, paint, paintbrushes, varnish, large pieces of material and that old mattress standing in the garage. Clean and paint the pallets, cut the mattress into the right size and cover it with fabric. Once the pallet is dry, place the mattress, the perfect bed for your trusty four legged friend is now ready. You can do the same for your cats.

Spring Vase, creating a vintage spring vase can be gorgeous, and no one will know that you made it from an old bed spring. Take one spring and insert a test tube or a similarly shaped glass vase. Stand the test tube up inside the spring and you’re done. For a vintage look leave the spring natural or you can paint it different colours.

Candle Holder, put together a small jar and a bed spring to create a sunning candle holder. Use these around the house or garden, fill the jars with citronella candles to keep the bugs away. For larger candles, push the candle into the spring to make sure it doesn’t slip, especially if you plan on lighting it. Once secured, just attach whatever you want to decorate the candle holder.

Photo Displays, a great way to display your photos using old bed springs. You’ll need wooden boards for this one, attached the springs or parts of them to the board to hold up your pictures. You can leave it rustic or paint them different colours.

Recipe Holder, do you always struggle to put your recipe cards somewhere while cooking or baking? Why not use an old bed spring? Make sure the spring is clean as you are going to use it in the kitchen, attach a clip to the end of the spring to hold the cards together. This will make a great gift for someone who love baking and cooking.

Garden Trellis, a clever way to use the entire bed spring especially when it is a bonnell spring. Just stand it up against the garden wall and let your vine type plants climb it.

Wine Charms, for the wine lovers out there. This is a great gift idea, leave it rustic or paint it. Twist the spring down over the bottle and attach a few charms, a simple and easy to display your bottles.

Room Divider, a brilliant and cost effective way to divide your rooms or even the patio to create some privacy. You can keep this one rustic or give it a good sanding down and spay it to match your décor. The art lies in the lights, choose subtle or funky.

There are so much you can do with your old mattress. Get creative and have fun.
