Just like a new pair of shoes, you have to wear it for some time to soften and conform to your unique shape.

The time frame for breaking in your mattress depends on the material, design and make and can take anything from 30 to 90 Days. Herewith a breakdown and some tips on how to speed it up.

Latex

Latex mattresses are made from synthetic or natural blended materials and has an elastic texture and feel. Latex mattresses can break-in faster than other types of mattresses as air remains in the synthetic foam. Here the break-in process may only take a few weeks.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses take the longest time to break-in due to the high density foam in it whereas lower density foam beds can have a shorter break-in time. Memory foam mattresses can take up to 90 days to break in.

Innerspring

Breaking in an Innerspring mattresses can take up to four weeks. The time frame can be shorter or longer just depends on how much time you spend sleeping on the mattress. Remember to flip and rotate your mattress every three months.

It’s not just all about breaking in your new mattress, you have to give your body time as well to adjust to your new mattress.

Speed it Up

Air it Out

It is quite normal for a new mattress to give off a slight odour when you first open it. So, before putting your mattress protector and linen on, air it out for at least 2 to 4 hours.

Foundation

A good foundation is just as important as having a good mattress. The correct level of support for your mattress can have a big impact on how comfortable the mattress feels, especially during the break-in period.

Room Temperature

Heat is required to adjust the firmness and flexibility of memory foam. When breaking in your foam mattress, don’t just rely on your body heat. Increasing the room temperature, will also help soften the fibres and materials and speed up the break-in process.

Time

A brand new mattress will have a tight cover, firmer foam, and springs that are not as flexible yet. Your new mattress might feel uncomfortable at first, be patient as it takes time for your body to adjust to a new mattress. Spend as much time as possible on your new bed so that the components and materials can soften and conform to your body. The more time you send on your bed the quicker you’ll break it in.

It can be stressful trying to figure out how to break-in a new mattress. Don’t despair, once you’ve broken in your new mattress, you’ll wonder why you stuck with your old mattress for so long.
